The RNLI is the charity that provides a 24-hour lifesaving service around the UK
and Republic of Ireland. Last year, the lifeboat service launched over 8,300
times and rescued an average of 22 people every day, whilst our lifeguards had
their busiest year yet, assisting over 10,400 people during the summer.
There
are over 4,700 lifeboat crewmembers in the UK and ROI, 8% of whom are women.
They are mostly volunteers who come from many walks of life within their local
communities and will readily exchange leisure, comfort and sleep for cold, wet
and fatigue. Crews spend many hours of their own time training to become highly
skilled and efficient. Their lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and
sometimes dangerous.
With more than 5 million people visiting the beaches of the South West of
England last year, it is vital that our lifeguards advise people on beach
safety, as well as performing rescues.
Whether lifeboat crew or lifeguard, the cost of providing essential equipment
and expert training is crucial. The demand for our lifesaving services is
increasing every year, and as a charity we need your help more than ever.
