National disability charity Motability provides safe, reliable and affordable cars and wheelchairs for disabled people, with over 450,000 people currently benefit from this scheme. Some people on the Motability Scheme need extra financial assistance so they can provide grants to help these people. This help could be towards a bigger vehicle for a family who have a disabled child for example, or help with adaptations to meet the specific needs of the disabled person or for driving lessons.
Ellie’s story below is an example of where money raised for Motability goes:
In many ways, six year old Ellie, is just like any other child, she loves the Teletubbies, seeing her grandparents and going to school. But Ellie was born with a neurological disorder called Rett’s
Syndrome, a degenerative condition which mainly affects girls. She will never be able to walk, talk or lead an independent life.
Ellie’s mum Sophie says “Before joining the Motability Scheme I drove a smaller car. It was extremely difficult lifting Ellie in and out, and it wasn’t big enough to fit the wheelchair or buggy in easily. So, two years ago, I decided to join the Scheme and chose a Vauxhall Zafira. I also applied for a grant from Motability to help towards the cost of a swivel seat for Ellie.
“Ellie can’t walk, so everywhere she goes she has to either be carried or pushed in a wheelchair. It’s wonderful being able to fit her wheelchair into the boot easily, and to sit her in the swivel seat without all that struggle.”
